Boudoir Spectrum: A High End Perspective

Boudoir has become a popular style of photography in the past couple of years, but with the positives have come some negative associations as well. It is not uncommon for people to be hesitant in shooting boudoir because of the idea of certain content that crosses the line of sensuality to a more sexier version of this particular photography style. There is a massive spectrum of what we consider “boudoir” and there are not very many distinctive names to say which part of the spectrum we are talking about.

Personalized Boudoir Photo Session | Orlando, FL

I did a boudoir session with a client that was in the process of publishing a book and becoming a published writer, so naturally the set included books to showcase her love for writing. The tone, however, was a bit more elaborate on who she was personality wise as well. I made sure to pose the client with different staging and props to also capture her free spirit and femininity.

The Beauty and Art of “You”

Boudoir photography, with a spectrum of styles, is often meant to achieve a certain look for their subjects and give them an experience that is both fun and uplifting. Clients always feel beautiful and sensual after a boudoir shoot and carry themselves with empowered energy and confidence. While this feeling of adventure and happiness is a wonderful approach and what other photographers focus on, in my studio I like to take that goal a step further and have it last forever.

Fashion has been used throughout centuries to represent the people, where they live, what their environment is like, and what they value and stand for. When looking back through history, fashion often depicts the time period in which people lived based on the style of clothing they wore. When it comes to photography, what the subject wears also paints a picture for them, and it is important for me as a photographer to pay attention to detail and choice of style when working with clients. The smallest of changes can make the difference between a good quality photo and a work of art.

The importance of texture can be witnessed all around us, a good example is how sculptures capture the softness of silk in their work. Though hard to the touch, to the eyes the silk fabric in sculptures is essentially “soft”. The same result is important to capture in photos, which is why floral portraits work so beautifully to capture unique high-end images as the texture of these natural wearable pieces always provide a multitude of texture when photographed correctly.

This past spring I worked with Iryna Shulzhenko to capture the beauty of flowers blooming after the cool winter. The idea was to show the colorful transition from winter to spring. From the very beginning we discussed picking two colors, grey and yellow. The grey to represent the foggy winter mornings, the yellow to represent warm sunny days. The combination coming together to capture the feeling of serenity that comes when nature all around us becomes colorful once again.

The smallest of changes can make the difference between a good quality photo and a work of art. Intrigued by the idea of fashion and what it represents in our culture, I worked to modernize a vintage Victorian style and use it to add character to a series of photographs.
